Tide

high tide rolls in and over her soul,
carrying strong waves of emotion,
she’s stuck at the water’s edge,
buried knee-deep in the sand,
wave after wave brings fondness and regret,
she works to free herself
from the rocks sharpened by guilt,
to retreat once more to the safety
of the lighthouse she dances in;
until she’s drawn once more to low tide
